They are covered with buff colored hair and the males have manes of black hair. Lion roars can cover distances of over 5 miles and roaring is thought to done primarily by males to signal possession of territory. Lions live in social groups called prides with an average of 15 members. Female lions usually stay together for life but males leave the pride every few years and are replaced by others. Life within the pride is generally peaceful and cooperative although fights may sometimes break out between males. African lions are considered vulnerable. Most of the population in Africa is found in national parks. Habitat loss and hunting remain significant dangers. RANGE: Africa, south of the Sahara. HABITAT: Grassy plains, savannas and semi-deserts. LIFE EXPECTANCY: Average lifespan in zoos is 13 to 15 years, less in wild.
