Zebras and Ostriches
Ostrich: At 8 feet tall and over 300 pounds, the ostrich is the world's largest living bird. It also has one of the largest eyes in the animal kingdom! Attached is an animal fact sheet with more facts. Riverbanks has two ostriches. One male, Bruce and one female, Zena.
Zebra: Grant's zebras live in small family groups of four to nine animals. Zebras are common and widespread throughout Africa. Below is some additional information on zebras. Riverbanks has two female zebras. Their names are Milly and Senanga.
OSTRICH RANGE: Central and southern regions of Africa.
OSTRICH HABITAT: Drier, sandy treeless and scrub regions of Africa.
OSTRICH LIFE EXPECTANCY: Up to 40 years in wild; some have lived to 70 in captivity.
OSTRICH BEHAVIOR: Live in large herds. Can run 40 MPH or more and can deliver powerful kicks that can disable or kill predators.
OSTRICH DIET WILD: rimarily herbivores eating seed heads of grasses, seeds and certain flowers. Occasionally, they will eat locusts or carrion.
OSTRICH DIET IN ZOO: Commercial feed and grains - about 3.5 pounds of food per day.
