What’s Missing?

Put 4 small different items in front of your child and have him look at them and say what they are.  For example, a small ball, a crayon, a coin, a hair clip can be used.

Have your child turn around while you remove one item and hide it behind your back. Have the child guess what item was removed.

  • Does he remember what color it was?
  • Can he describe it?

With time, you can gradually increase the number of items to further challenge your child.

Now have your child be the hider.  Repeat the game, using the different items.

This teaches observation, focus, and language skills. At the age of 4, it is recommended that children have a vocabulary of 4,000 words and learn approximately 5 new words daily (Parents as Teachers, National Center).  This is best achieved through the context of hands-on experiences.
